Nominating Conventions

The Executive Board of the State Democratic Party has adopted rules for Nominating Conventions. This is in response to the US Supreme Court overruling the 9th District Court of Appeals. Initiative 872 is in place, and is being implemented by the Secretary of State, and part of the process that the Democratic Party has adopted is a requirement that we designate who the official nominee of the party is for each partisan office.

Message from Javier Valdez, Chair, 46th District Democrats

May 16, 2008

On Thursday, May 15th, the 46th District Democrats held their nominating convention for the State House Position 1 and State House Position 2.

Phyllis Gutierrez Kenney was nominated by acclamation for St. House Position 2, since she was the only individual nominated for the position.

Scott White and Gerry Pollet were nominated for St. House Position 1, and per the rules set by the State Democratic Party, only elected and appointed precinct committee officers were allowed to vote on the nomination. Each pco’s vote was weighted, based on how many delegates their precinct was allotted in the 2008 precinct caucus held in February.

When the tally committee presented the vote to be announced to the body, the tally committee’s report was Gerry Pollet 329 votes and Scott White 326 votes, and Gerry Pollet was announced as winning the nomination based on that report.

Since the adjournment of the meeting, questions have been raised as to whether all ballots had been counted and whether a recount had occurred after the adjournment of the meeting. No official recount has been taken by the 46th District Democrats and we are currently awaiting counsel from the State Democratic Party as to next steps, if any, need to be taken.

Until that time, the announced results at the May 15th currently stand as the official vote by the elected and appointed precinct committee officers of the 46th District Democrats.
