Resolution of the 46th District Democrats
Opposing construction of the sports field complex at Magnuson Park
Adopted on June 19, 2003

WHEREAS, the 22-acre illuminated sports field complex proposed for Warren G. Magnuson Park will permanently degrade the wildlife habitat of all of the Sand Point Peninsula, will eliminate natural open spaces that are now available for the use of all citizens, and will have profound, adverse effects on low income residents of the park and on Northeast Seattle neighborhoods through increased traffic, noise pollution, and light pollution; and

WHEREAS, the Pro Parks Levy, that will partially fund this project, was viewed by those who supported it as a levy to support open and green spaces, not artificial surfaces and stadium-like illumination; and

WHEREAS, community groups throughout the 46th District, as well as environmental and wildlife stewardship organizations such as the Seattle Audubon Society and the Seattle Chapter of the Sierra Club, endorse all efforts to protect the park, wildlife, residents and neighborhoods from the damaging impacts of this project;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the 46th District Democrats oppose the construction of this sports field complex at Warren G. Magnuson Park and urge the Mayor of Seattle and the City Council to disapprove the illuminated sports field complex and to deny funding for such a purpose at Warren G. Magnuson Park.
