Resolution of the 46th District Democrats

Opposing the Confirmation of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court and
in Support of a Filibuster of his Nomination

WHEREAS, the lifetime appointment of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court would strike a long-lasting blow for individual rights, liberties, and the fundamental constitutional protections that we take for granted;

WHEREAS, Samuel Alito has a lengthy and troubling record indicating extreme views outside the mainstream of America;

WHEREAS, Samuel Alito has been a chief strategist for the expansion and abuse of executive power (including secret and illegal domestic spying) -- at the expense of our cherished and essential system of checks and balances that is the foundation of American democracy;

WHEREAS, Samuel Alito, throughout his legal career, has acted to diminish reproductive rights with the ultimate goal of overturning Roe v. Wade;

WHEREAS, Samuel Alito's record reveals extremist views in a broad range of other areas, including workers rights, voting rights, the environment, and criminal law;

WHEREAS, the Supreme Court is our last line of defense for maintaining the fundamental rights and freedoms provided by our Constitution;

WHEREAS, the filibuster is a tool that exists to stop extremists from confirmation;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the 46th District Democrats, for the sake of upholding our Constitution and Bill of Rights and defending our Democracy, urge our United States Senators from the State of Washington to exercise their Constitutionally-mandated oversight responsibilities by voting against the confirmation of Samuel Alito.

THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the 46th District Democrats encourage our United States Senators to use any legal means at their disposal to stop his confirmation, including a filibuster.
